Describe Muri Lelu in 5 words

Subversive. Ritualistic. Luxurious. Aromatic.  Plant Magic.

What are some of the benefits of full spectrum cannabis skincare products? Why is THC good for skin?

Cannabis is one of the beauty industry’s most impactful recent discoveries. We’ve long known THC and CBD to be great healers of inflammation — which also happens to be the root cause for most major skin issues. It works on everyday concerns like redness, irritation, and puffiness. But it’s also great for more substantial issues like acne, eczema and even psoriasis. Cannabinoids are proving to be one of the most effective treatments for soothing skin and restoring its balance. Muri Lelu is also chock full of beautifying fatty acids that help skin retain moisture.

What are the beneficial properties of sativa vs. indica? How does each strain differ on the skin? Tell us more about the aromatherapy effect in cannabis topicals.

At Muri Lelu, our mission is to bottle the magic of this plant. Even though we’re making topicals, we wanted to create a fully layered ritual that pays homage to all aspects of the plant. We decided to approach this by considering the mood-enhancing effects that each strain doffers. So we incorporate those into our rituals.

This comes to life as cannabis aromatherapy, which is infused into both our Morning Serum and our Evening Oil. We leaned on Sativa for our a.m. blend. We use essential oils that mimic the terpenes found in this strain. We found them in beautiful, bright, citrusy ingredients like bergamot, geranium rose, and lemongrass. The effect is awakening and energizing. It creates a mood much like what you’d experience when enjoying Sativa via other methods.

We approached our p.m. blend similarly. But it’s inspired by Indica. Our essential oil blend is fueled with sensual, sedating terpenes like black pepper, nutmeg, cypress, clary sage and more. It’s the perfect calming, relaxing effect. Our p.m. ritual is like the signature “couch lock” effect you get when smoking Indica strains at night.

Does cannabis skincare make you…elevated?

Like any topical, cannabis sinks into the skin and works at the deepest layers. But it doesn’t actually make contact with your bloodstream. That means you reap the healing benefits of cannabinoids without their psychoactive effects.

What’s YOUR cannabis skincare routine on a daily basis?

Muri Lelu, all day—literally. 😉

My routine is pretty minimal. I use FRESH Soy Face Cleanser both morning and night without fail. I love that it doesn’t leave my skin feeling tight or stripped.

AM Ritual

In the morning, I follow up with our Bloomrise Sativa Serum. I use about a half to full dropper, depending on how dry my skin is feeling, (I often have dry skin.) I apply it to the spots I tend to have dryness first. For me, that’s my forehead, nose, and chin. I’ll apply the leftovers to my cheeks and then take my time inhaling and massaging it in with upward strokes. All the while, I listen to a playlist or a podcast (either The Daily or Democracy Now).

In the winter, I might follow up with another moisturizer on top. But, no matter what, I always end the routine with SPF.

PM Ritual

For nighttime, I try to set a more relaxing stage. I use a diffuser with essential oils or incense. As I wind down, I wash my face again. Then, I warm up 4-5 drops (6-7 if I’m feeling extra!) of our Mauvaise Herbe Indica Oil in my hands. This is where the fun part comes in. I inhale deeply 2-3 times, letting the essential oil blend soothe my senses. That makes a final dose of evening calm soak over me. After that, it’s bedtime pretty quickly.

Favorite thing about the plant?

The magic of it all.✨ Of course, I love that the plant is fully actualized in its female form. That’s one of the most beautiful parts of the cannabis story.

How are you contributing to the cannabis community through Muri Lelu? How do you support those who have been unfairly affected by cannabis laws?

Our brand is on a mission to make cannabis (not just CBD) central to the beauty conversation—from the seed up. That means not only representing the full flower in our formulations. We also acknowledge the rich culture, community, and history of the plant. That includes the politics of cannabis. The War on Drugs decimated communities of color. We need the industries that this plant powers to, not only be educated about that, but also to be invested in righting those wrongs and making sure equity is in place moving forward.

Our Higher Standard commitment is our brand’s pledge to donate a percentage of our sales to organizations that support restorative justice reform. One of our Founders worked as a lawyer for 25+ years. So, organically, we knew that starting with justice reform was a natural place for us to focus our efforts.

We’re also a part of the amazing Floret Coalition, an anti-racist collective of brands in the cannabis space assembled by Broccoli magazine. The collective contributes monthly donations to various community-led organizations. This has been incredibly rewarding. The War on Drugs has affected more than just the individuals who have been impacted by prohibition. It’s affected whole communities. We need to acknowledge that in our reparative work as well.

Some of our faves: @carl.ostberg, @watts.hot, and @balboste_paris, which is the most adorable Parisian sweets maker that we just came across.

Muri Lelu is certainly pioneering the world of cannabis skincare. Do you have any visions of where this industry might go in the future?

This is just the beginning. Cannabis as a beauty ingredient is one of the most transformative and radical discoveries of recent times. So we can’t wait to see more people embracing the beauty of the plant in full bloom!
